Connecting Calendars
A calendar connects to Vrge one of three ways: by signing in (Google Calendar, Outlook), over CalDAV with an app password (iCloud, Fastmail, Nextcloud, any CalDAV server), or by pasting a calendar link, an .ics or webcal address. All three are read-only: Vrge never creates, edits or deletes an event. The first sync reads the last 7 days (the entry in Sources can widen that), and every sync looks 60 days ahead.
Meetings become time entries, client proposals (when an attendee is on a business domain) and meeting notes in the Inbox, not tasks. Nothing is saved until you approve it. Calendars connect from the desktop app; the browser client for teams does not offer them.
Google Calendar and Outlook (sign in)
- Go to Settings → Sources and click Connect on Google Calendar or Outlook Calendar.
- Your browser opens the provider's own sign-in page. Vrge never sees your password.
- Approve the read-only permission,
calendar.events.readonlyat Google,Calendars.Readat Microsoft, and the window returns you to Vrge.
Mail is a separate source; see Connecting Sources for Gmail and Outlook mail.
iCloud, Fastmail and Nextcloud (CalDAV)
- Go to Settings → Sources and click Connect on CalDAV.
- Pick your provider. The server URL is filled in for Apple iCloud and Fastmail; for Nextcloud type your own address.
- Enter your username and the app password from your provider (below), then click Test connection.
- Vrge checks the password and lists your calendars. Your own are ticked; calendars shared with you are listed but off, because someone else's meetings are not your work. Untick anything you don't want watched, then click Connect.
The entry in Sources shows the first calendar's name and how many more it watches. To change the selection later, click Calendars on the entry. No password needed.
Apple iCloud
- Sign in at account.apple.com. Under Sign-In and Security, select App-Specific Passwords, then Generate an app-specific password. Name it Vrge and copy the password. Your Apple Account needs two-factor authentication turned on.
- In Vrge, pick Apple iCloud. The server is
https://caldav.icloud.com, already filled in. Apple ID (email) is your Apple Account address; App-specific password is the one you just made, not your Apple Account password.
Changing your Apple Account password revokes every app-specific password. Make a new one and reconnect.
Fastmail
- In Fastmail, go to Settings → Privacy & Security. Under Connected apps & API tokens, click Manage app passwords and access, then New app password. Name it, leave access at Mail, Contacts & Calendars, click Generate password and copy it. Fastmail shows it once.
- In Vrge, pick Fastmail. The server is already filled in. Email is your full Fastmail address, including the domain; App password is the one you just made. Your regular Fastmail password is refused.
Basic plans do not include CalDAV.
Nextcloud
- Click your avatar, then Settings → Security. Under Devices & sessions, enter an app name (Vrge) and click Create new app password. Copy the password from the box that appears. Nextcloud shows it once.
- In Vrge, pick Nextcloud. The server URL is your Nextcloud address, for example
cloud.example.com. Vrge addshttps://and finds the calendar path itself. Enter your username and the app password. With two-factor sign-in, an app password is the only kind Nextcloud accepts.
Any other CalDAV server
Pick Custom, enter the server address, and sign in with the username and password (or app password) the server expects. Vrge looks for the calendar path itself: /.well-known/caldav first, then the server root.
Any calendar by link (.ics / webcal)
- Go to Settings → Sources and click Connect on Calendar link.
- Paste the link,
https://orwebcal://, and click Check link. Vrge fetches it and shows how many events it holds and the calendar's name. - Give it a name if you like, then click Connect.
The link is a password: anyone who has it can read the calendar. Vrge keeps it in your keychain and never shows it again, not even in an error message. Check link counts every event in the feed; only those inside the sync window are read.
Google Calendar
Signing in (above) is the usual way. The link is for when you would rather not.
- On a computer, open Google Calendar and click Settings (the gear, top right).
- Under Settings for my calendars, click the calendar, then Integrate calendar.
- Copy the Secret address in iCal format.
Only you should know this address. If it leaks, click Reset there and reconnect with the new one. On a work or school account, your admin controls whether it is available.
Apple iCloud (public calendar)
CalDAV (above) needs no public link and covers every calendar you own. Use a link only for a single calendar you are happy to publish.
- At icloud.com/calendar, hover over the calendar in the sidebar and click the Calendar Information button.
- Turn on Public Calendar.
- Click Copy and paste the link into Vrge as it is.
In the Mac Calendar app: hover over the calendar, click the Share Calendar button, select Public Calendar, click the Share button to send yourself the link, then Done. Anyone with the link can view the calendar; turn Public Calendar off to revoke it.
Outlook.com and Microsoft 365
Signing in (above) is the usual way, and the one with correct times. See the limit below.
- In Outlook on the web, open Settings → Calendar → Shared calendars.
- Under Publish a calendar, choose the calendar and Can view all details (the other levels publish only busy times, or titles and locations), then click Publish.
- Copy the ICS link.
Outlook publishes times with Windows time-zone names, which Vrge cannot place, so it reads them as UTC and events can show shifted by your offset. Sign in with Microsoft for correct times. Unpublish on the same screen revokes the link.
Calendly and Cal.com
Neither publishes a feed of your bookings. Each booking is written into a calendar you connected to them: Calendly into Google Calendar, Office 365 / Outlook.com or Exchange (it has taken no new iCloud connections since 20 August 2024); Cal.com into Google, Outlook, Apple Calendar or a CalDAV server. Connect that calendar to Vrge and the bookings arrive with it.
What Vrge reads, and what it leaves out
- The last 7 days on the first sync (widen it on the entry in Sources), and 60 days ahead on every sync.
- Over CalDAV, the calendars you ticked. Calendars shared with you stay off unless you tick them; to-do lists are never listed.
- iCloud's Birthdays calendar is built from your Contacts and holiday calendars are subscriptions, so neither is an iCloud calendar of yours to sync.
- Outlook published links: times are read as UTC (above).
Disconnecting
Go to Settings → Sources and click Disconnect. Vrge deletes the password or link from your keychain immediately. To lock Vrge out at the provider as well: Apple → App-Specific Passwords → Remove; Fastmail → Manage app passwords and access → Remove; Nextcloud → Devices & sessions, remove the Vrge entry; Google → Reset the secret address; Outlook → Unpublish; iCloud → turn Public Calendar off.
